Conventional agriculture increases global warming while decreasing system sustainability

A study reveals that conventional agriculture’s global warming potential has increased dramatically from 1961 to 2020, with tillage, fertilizers, and irrigation being the main contributors. The research projects a threefold increase in agriculture GWP by 2100 but suggests that green energy and climate-smart techniques could reduce emissions to 2.3 PgCO2e and improve sustainability.

DP19643 Greenflation: Empirical Evidence using Macro, Regional and Sectoral Data

A research study examines the impact of climate change policies on inflation across 177 economies, 78 subnational areas, and 17 sectors from 1989-2022. The study finds that carbon taxes increase inflation by 0.7-4%, while emissions trading systems and other climate policies like R&D subsidies show no significant price effects.

COP16 has concluded with landmark agreements including recognition of Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent as key drivers in biodiversity conservation, and the creation of the Cali Fund for genetic data resources. The summit has established a new subsidiary body for Indigenous participation and created a global fund for collecting economic resources from digital sequence information, though financing model and monitoring mechanism remain unresolved.
