NKT awarded Bornholm Energy Island cable connection
NKT signed a contract with Energinet worth around EUR 650m to supply 525 kV HVDC on- and offshore cables (200 km offshore, 16.8 km onshore) to connect Bornholm Energy Island to Zealand, including design, manufacture and installation. The project will also link the island to Germany (following a 2023 turnkey award with 50Hertz); cables will be produced at NKT’s Karlskrona factory and installed using the vessel NKT Eleonora (operational 2027).
BGS releases national predictive seabed sediments dataset
The British Geological Survey (BGS) has released the national-scale BGS Predictive Seabed Sediments (UK) dataset mapping sediment types and predicted proportions of gravel, sand and mud across the UK continental shelf, generated using about 40,000 samples and machine learning. The dataset is freely available under the Open Government Licence and was initially co-funded and supported by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.
G20 RIWG hackathon advances DRR open innovation
South Africa’s DSTI is hosting the G20 RIWG Hackathon (DRR-OI) through 5 September 2025 to develop AI- and geospatial-based demonstrators for forecasting informal urban expansion and flood risk. Final prototypes will be presented at the G20 Research and Innovation Ministerial Meeting on 23 September 2025, with participation from multidisciplinary teams across multiple G20 countries.
