Canada invests $40M to expand HVDC transformer manufacturing

The Government of Canada is investing $40 million through the Strategic Response Fund to expand Hitachi Energy Canada’s Varennes HVDC transformer manufacturing facility and add a test lab and HVDC simulation centre in Montréal. The federal contribution increases from $30 million to $40 million, and total project costs rise from $164.2 million to $410 million, with the company targeting more than 500 FTEs and increased student co-op positions.

UK commits to 81% emissions cut by 2035

UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy announced the UK’s NDC to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 81% by 2035 versus 1990 levels. He urged multilateral action ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, pledged continued UK support to developing countries via the NDC Partnership, and framed the NDC as economy-wide and aligned with 1.5°C.

Canada funds satellite data projects to protect biodiversity

The Canadian Space Agency announced a $5 million smartEarth investment to fund 20 Canadian companies to develop satellite-data projects addressing biodiversity challenges. The projects will use AI for tasks such as detecting invasive plants and monitoring migratory birds; 8 projects will collaborate with Indigenous organizations and 35% of leads are new recipients.

EU renewables reach 54.0% of electricity in Q2 2025

Eurostat reports that renewables supplied 54.0% of net electricity generation in the EU in Q2 2025, up from 52.7% a year earlier, with solar generating 122 317 GWh (19.9% of total). In June 2025 solar reached 22.0% and became the EU’s largest electricity source, ahead of nuclear (21.6%), wind (15.8%), hydro (14.1%) and natural gas (13.8%).
