Newsom signs bills to boost California quantum and fusion
Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 940 and SB 80 to accelerate California’s quantum and fusion sectors and announced $4 million for quantum and $5 million for fusion R&D. The signing took place Oct 3, 2025 at UC Berkeley’s National Quantum Information Science Research Center and aims for a fusion pilot project in the 2040s.
Canada invests over $22M to accelerate domestic battery innovation
The Government of Canada (Natural Resources Canada) announced on October 3, 2025 that it will invest over $22 million through the Energy Innovation Program to fund eight Canadian battery projects. Major recipients include NOVONIX ($5,000,000), Calumix ($4,545,000), Flex-Ion ($3,319,640), HPQ Silicon ($3,000,000), and NanoXplore ($2,750,000).
Current Trends in Scope 3 GHG Emissions Disclosure Rates 2025
ISS-Corporate found that about 29% of 8,231 publicly traded companies disclose Scope 3 emissions, rising to 48% among large-cap firms (> $10bn market cap). Its analysis of 2,394 reporters shows Purchased Goods & Services (Category 1) and Use of Sold Products (Category 11) are often largest and that sector drivers vary (e.g., Investments for Financials; Fuel & Energy Activities for Utilities); data as of August 13, 2025.
Sri Lanka Central Bank Governor on AI-driven sustainable banking
P Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, urged banks to adopt AI and digitization to transform banking into intelligent, customer-centric services and to support sustainable finance. He highlighted AI uses including predictive credit scoring, real-time fraud detection, AI-powered credit assessments for underserved populations, and ESG evaluation to channel capital to green investments.
Japan Lists New Offshore Wind Promising and Preparatory Zones
METI and MLIT have classified two offshore areas (Akita City offshore and Hibikinada offshore) as “promising areas” and three others (Asahi City offshore, south of Goto City — floating, and Ichikikushikino City offshore) as “preparatory areas” under the Act on Promotion of the Utilization of Sea Areas for Marine Renewable Energy Sources. JOGMEC was selected to perform site surveys in three areas (Akita City offshore, Asahi City offshore, Hibikinada offshore) and will proceed with preparations assuming the FY2026 government budget.
MHI studies green hydrogen and ammonia exports from India
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has started a study, in partnership with Hygenco and supported by METI’s FY2023 Global South program, to develop a master plan and economic models for exporting green hydrogen and green ammonia produced in India for use in markets including Singapore. The study will model production, transport constraints, and economically viable facilities and will propose measures to governments worldwide to promote adoption of carbon-neutral fuels.
