UNEP and ICAO launch $82.5M FIRE project
UNEP and ICAO have launched the FIRE (Fortifying Infrastructure for Responsible Extinguishment) project to phase out PFAS-containing firefighting foams at major airports in Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
- Main action: UNEP and ICAO launched the FIRE project to phase out PFAS-containing firefighting foams at major airports in Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, implemented by UNEP, executed by ICAO, and funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
- Funding and scope: The project has an $82.5 million budget (including a $10 million GEF grant and $72.5 million co-financing), and will support the transition to fluorine-free foams, including the safe removal of 4,500 tonnes of PFAS-contaminated material from fire trucks and safe disposal of 130 tonnes of PFAS-based foam concentrate.
