METI launches GX Strategic Regions proposal call

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has opened a proposal call for the new “GX Strategic Regions”制度 and is accepting submissions from municipalities and businesses starting today.

  • Main announcement: METI is soliciting proposals for three specified GX strategy types — (1) Revitalized industrial complexes (industrial cluster conversion and new GX business creation), (2) Data center cluster type (proper siting considering power grid/infrastructure), and (3) Decarbonized power utilization type (expansion and local use of decarbonized electricity for supply chains). Registration period: 2025-08-26 to 2025-10-27. Proposals for types ① and ② should reflect requirements decided at the GX Implementation Council; type ③ should involve projects that utilize decarbonized power.
  • Background and details: The call implements the GX Industrial Location policy developed under the GX2040 Vision and the Cabinet Secretariat’s GX Industrial Location Working Group. METI will later run a formal public competition based on submitted proposals. For applicants considering the data center cluster type, METI will introduce a dedicated contact at the relevant regional general transmission and distribution operator — applicants must select “Data center cluster type” on the registration form to request that introduction.
