Canada invests $2.5M in Metro Vancouver Waste-to-Energy District

The Government of Canada announced a $2.5 million investment to support Metro Vancouver’s Waste-to-Energy District energy project (announced August 26, 2025, Burnaby, British Columbia).

  • Main announcement & project details: The federal funding of $2.5 million (announced by Parliamentary Secretary Wade Grant, joined by Gregor Robertson, Mike Hurley and Sarah Kirby‑Yung) will support Metro Vancouver’s Waste-to-Energy District to capture steam from the Burnaby Waste-to-Energy Facility and supply heating and hot water to up to 50,000 homes; the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70,000 tonnes per year and, according to Metro Vancouver, will triple the energy recovery potential compared with generating electricity alone.

  • Background and supporting details: The investment is delivered through the Low Carbon Economy Challenge (part of the Low Carbon Economy Fund). As of March 2025 the Challenge Fund has supported 48 projects with $73 million in funding; the Burnaby facility currently handles roughly one-quarter of the region’s waste and provides enough electricity for 16,000 homes. Facility emissions are described as very low, have fallen after upgrades, and are monitored and shared in real time online.
