The Utah Office of Energy Development (OED), TerraPower and Flagship Companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to explore siting a Natrium® reactor and energy storage plant in Utah.

  • Main announcement: The three parties will jointly identify and assess sites for a potential Natrium advanced nuclear plant, with a goal of establishing preliminary site recommendations by the end of 2025; site selection criteria include community support, physical site characteristics, ability to obtain NRC licensing, and access to existing infrastructure.
  • Background & details: Natrium is a TerraPower/GE-Hitachi technology featuring a 345 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor with a molten salt-based energy storage system that can boost output to 500 MW when needed; TerraPower broke ground on the first Natrium project in 2024 in Wyoming. Flagship Companies will provide land data and assistance identifying candidate sites. Media contacts provided: trees@utah.gov, press@terrapower.com, media@flagshiptoday.com.
