NKT awarded Bornholm Energy Island cable connection
NKT has signed a contract with Energinet to deliver the 525 kV HVDC on- and offshore power cable systems connecting Bornholm Energy Island to Zealand, Denmark.
- Main award: NKT will design, manufacture and install a 525 kV HVDC power cable system under a contract valued at around EUR 650m, covering a 200 km offshore route and 16.8 km onshore route to connect Bornholm Energy Island to the Danish grid (and link to Germany). The supply covers both onshore and offshore cable systems for the Danish connection to the energy island.
- Background & implementation details: Bornholm Energy Island is planned to receive up to 3.8 GW of offshore wind via two HVDC interconnectors; this award follows a 2023 turnkey contract with German TSO 50Hertz to connect the island to Germany. NKT will produce cables at its Karlskrona high-voltage factory (running on renewable electricity) to reduce transport emissions, and offshore installation is planned using the new cable-laying vessel NKT Eleonora, expected to be operational in 2027.
