CO2NNEX platform to manage e-methane certificates

INPEX, Osaka Gas, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced they will implement the city gas industry’s first Clean Gas Certificate transfer and management system using MHI’s CO2NNEX® digital platform for the Nagaoka Methanation Demonstration.

  • Main action: Implement CO2NNEX® to visualize attribute data (e-methane, H2, CO2), create and transfer Clean Gas Certificates, and use MRV functions to monitor/graph attribute data and issue Clean Gas Certificate usage certificates for the Nagaoka Methanation Demonstration (e-methane produced using H2 and CO2 recovered from the Koshijihara Plant and injected into INPEX’s natural gas pipeline). The demonstration is described as using one of the world’s largest methanation systems and is part of a project subsidized by NEDO.
  • Background and timeline/details: The initiative builds on MHI’s CO2NNEX® platform and joint implementation work with Osaka Gas; Japan’s METI plans a phased launch of a clean fuel certificate system (including gaseous fuels) in FY2026 with preparatory discussions/management system development in FY2025. The press release references prior announcements (October 24, 2023) and provides links to NEDO/METI documentation.
