Danish households with EVs consume more electricity

Danmarks Statistik publishes an analysis showing that households with electric cars and households with electric heating have substantially higher median electricity consumption in 2024.

  • Main findings: Median electricity consumption in 2024 was 1.9 times higher for single-family households with an electric vehicle compared with those with a petrol/diesel car; households with electric heating (primarily heat pumps and electric radiators) had 3.1 times higher median consumption than households with district heating. The highest municipal shares of households with EVs were Frederiksberg (39.2%) and Gentofte (37.7%); the highest shares of electric-based heating were Lejre (41.8%), Samsø (41.7%), and Stevns (39.1%).
  • Data and context: The analysis uses Energinet smart meter data (measurements available since 2021) combined with Statistics Denmark data; it notes seasonal spikes (higher winter consumption for electric heating). In 2023, electricity expenses equalled 2.2% of an average household’s total expenditure (approx. 9,000 kr. for electricity; 14,500 kr. for district heating etc.; 7,300 kr. for petrol/diesel).
