South Africa promotes sustainable fuels, hydrogen and CCUS
The Republic of South Africa, represented by Deputy Minister Nomalungelo Gina, announced support for scaling the production and utilisation of sustainable fuels including hydrogen, biofuels and CCUS, and highlighted specific national frameworks and flagship programmes.
- Main announcement / action: South Africa supports scaling sustainable fuels and has adopted comprehensive hydrogen policies, broadened its decarbonisation strategy to include biofuels and carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS), and is promoting robust policy and regulatory frameworks to enable scale-up (notably the Biofuel Regulatory Framework (BRF) and the CoalCO₂-X RDI Flagship Programme).
- Background / implementation details: The BRF provides mandatory blending regulations, feedstock protocols, and biofuels selection for manufacturers and addresses cost recovery mechanisms and subsidies; the CoalCO₂-X programme focuses on piloting CCU technology in South Africa and the statement calls for research, development and innovation (RD&I) collaboration and cross-border supply chains.
