Tata Steel Port Talbot Transition Board update

The Tata Steel / Port Talbot Transition Board met on 4 September 2025, chaired by Rt Hon Jo Stevens MP, to review the effectiveness and allocation of UK Government funding and receive programme updates.

  • Main announcement/action: The Board confirmed that all of the UK Government’s £80 million support has now been allocated, reviewed delivery outcomes to date (including 37 supply-chain businesses receiving grants, 43 local businesses receiving growth/resilience grants, 22 new businesses created using grants, 3,667 training courses/qualifications funded, 332 people supported into new jobs via Transition Board employability services, and nearly 600 Tata Steel employees offered alternative opportunities), and agreed continued monitoring of fund effectiveness and delivery of the new Economic Growth & Investment Fund.
  • Background and additional details: The meeting (4 September 2025, Port Talbot) included presentations from Neath Port Talbot’s Employability Team and Business Wales on application processes and case studies; an update from Tata Steel UK on its decarbonisation programme noting construction of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) started in July 2025; and an update from the Department of Business and Trade on its plans for a steel strategy. The Board agreed to continue monitoring implementation and to support future investment and regeneration in the region.
