California exceeds 200,000 public EV chargers
The Office of the Governor of California announced that the state has surpassed 201,180 publicly available electric vehicle (EV) charging ports statewide.
- Main announcement: California reports 201,180 fully public and shared EV charging ports (an increase of 22,631 since March) and 20,093 medium- and heavy-duty (MDHD) ZEV charging and hydrogen fueling points (an increase of 3,766 or 23% since February). The announcement states 94% of Californians live within 10 minutes of an EV charger and cites the California Energy Commission (CEC) as the data source.
- Background and implementation details: California state agencies are providing grant funds for public, workplace and at-home charging (including multi-family), prioritizing shovel-ready fast-charging installations through CEC grant solicitations, developing the ZEV Infrastructure Plan, and establishing charger reliability standards. The release notes federal incentives end September 30 (tax credits up to $7,500 for eligible new ZEVs, up to $4,000 for eligible used ZEVs, and up to $1,000 for at-home charging and associated battery storage), and states the administration blocked the federal government from withholding previously approved funding in June.
