DHL and Henkel expand Sustainable Marine Fuel use
DHL Global Forwarding will utilize Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF) for the majority of Henkel’s ocean freight volumes in 2025 via its GoGreen Plus service, allocating emissions reductions to Henkel through the Book & Claim approach.
- Main announcement: DHL Global Forwarding will cover around 9,000 TEUs of Henkel ocean freight with GoGreen Plus in 2025, using waste- and residues-based Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF); this is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ~4,700 metric tons of CO2e (well-to-wake) in 2025 and the reductions will be verified by SGS.
- Background and implementation details: The 2025 expansion builds on a 2024 pilot between Henkel and DHL; most shipments originate in Europe; DHL allocates environmental benefits to Henkel via Book & Claim (replacement of fossil fuels within DHL’s network even when shipments are not physically transported with the assets using these fuels).
