EU delegation inaugurates Cleanergy Solutions Namibia facility

The EU inaugurated the Cleanergy Solutions Namibia green hydrogen facility in Namibia, launched in presence of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and a high-level EU delegation.

  • Main announcement: The joint venture Cleanergy Solutions Namibia (Belgian CMB.TECH and Namibian O&L Group) launched Namibia’s first large-scale solar-powered green hydrogen facility producing green ammonia for maritime shipping and building a green hydrogen refuelling station at Walvis Bay; the EU has mobilised €1.3 billion (NAD 25 billion) in loans and grants and the project is expected to spur over €20 billion (NAD 400 billion) in potential private investments. Germany’s BMFTR provided grant funding for this project phase and two associated tugboat and locomotive projects; future expansion will include an ammonia jetty and storage facility and scaling hydrogen/ammonia production for export to South Africa and the EU with an estimated €3 billion investment.

  • Background and implementation details: The site hosts Namibia’s first Hydrogen Academy in partnership with European and Namibian universities and training institutes to upskill local engineers and technicians; the project is presented under the EU Global Gateway agenda (Global Gateway total contribution cited as €300 billion), and the EU delegation highlighted support across education, training, regulatory framework and a “360-degree approach.”
