MEPs call for high-ambition EU climate policy for COP30

The Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI) adopted its policy demands for COP30, urging the EU to maintain high climate ambition and to set a science-based 2040 target.

• Main action: ENVI adopted a resolution (57 in favour, 23 against, 4 abstentions) calling for the EU to remain a leader in international climate negotiations, to adopt a science-based 2040 climate target in line with the European Climate Law, to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, and to urge the Council to adopt the EU’s climate pledge for 2035 as soon as possible. The text also regrets that the EU did not submit its updated NDC on time.
