Canada to launch fifth Canadian-dollar green bond issuance

The Government of Canada is launching its fifth issuance of Canadian-dollar-denominated green bonds this week, subject to market conditions.

  • Issuance details: Launching a new 30-year green bond and a re-opening of the 7-year bond issued in February 2025 (the Feb 2025 7-year had a final order book of over $3.1 billion). This is the government’s first 30-year maturity green bond and adds to $13 billion of green bonds issued since March 2022. Proceeds will fund green infrastructure, nature conservation, clean growth, renewable energy, climate action, and environmental protection to support Canada’s path to net-zero by 2050.
  • Background and framework: Canada launched its green bond program in March 2022, released the Green Bond Allocation and Impact Report 2023-24 in June 2025, and updated the Green Bond Framework in November 2023 to make certain nuclear expenditures eligible. The Framework is aligned with other sovereign issuers (France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom) and targets investor demand supported by Canada’s AAA credit rating.
