Coalition backs Google's first NG+CCS project for data centers
The Carbon Capture Coalition issued a statement praising Google’s announcement to purchase power from a new natural gas-fired power plant being developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure at the Broadwing plant in Decatur, Illinois, with captured CO2 to be stored at ADM’s operating Class VI well.
- Announcement: The Coalition welcomed Google’s purchase-power agreement for a new natural gas (NG) + carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant at Broadwing, Decatur, Illinois, developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure, with captured CO2 to be stored at ADM‘s operating Class VI well; ADM has safely stored more than 3.5 million metric tons of CO2 and has operated the US’s first Class VI well for more than a decade.
- Background & policy stance: The statement cited projected 35–40% electricity demand growth by 2040 driven by AI and data centers, described NG + CCS as a complementary source of affordable, firm, low-carbon dispatchable power, and committed the Coalition to advocate for federal market signals, regulations, and permitting to scale NG + CCS and supportive CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.
