Rethinking Load Growth in U.S. Power Systems
U.S.-based Duke University conducted a study analyzing the potential for integrating large flexible loads into the power system to manage increasing electricity demands. The study estimates that balancing authorities could collectively add nearly 100 gigawatts of large loads to the grid with minimal impacts, allowing them to manage demands during peak times by curtailing usage briefly. This flexible load approach is seen as a cost-effective alternative that avoids over-investing in new power generation infrastructure. The findings emphasize the significant role that load flexibility can play in maintaining grid reliability while accommodating future energy demands.
