EU publishes strategic roadmap for digitalisation and AI in energy

The European Commission has published the Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in energy under the European Technological Sovereignty Package.

• Main action: The Commission published a Strategic Roadmap (COM/2026/501) to guide digitalisation and AI in the energy sector, structured around three pillars: sustainable integration of data centers, accelerating uptake of digital and AI solutions, and cross-border data sharing; the roadmap cites €71 billion/year in potential savings from demand-side flexibility and €94 billion (~$110 billion) annually by 2035 from AI-based O&M optimisation.
• Implementation & next steps: Today (3 June 2026) Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen will witness the signature of a declaration of intent by 14 EU industry associations to cooperate in a tripartite agreement with energy stakeholders and data center operators; the Commission will also launch the AI.grids Community of Practice for AI models for grid management and planning.
