EU adopts common rating scheme for data centers

The European Commission has announced a new delegated regulation establishing a common EU rating scheme for data centers. - The scheme will use electronic labels generated by the European database on data centers, with labels issued by 15 August 2027 and renewed annually.

• The regulation amends Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1364, introduces new definitions such as “waste heat reuse ready” and “freshwater,” and allows voluntary participation for data centers below 500 kW and for not-yet-operational data centers.
• The Commission says the scheme will improve transparency, support better procurement and policy-making, and will be reviewed by 31 December 2028 and every three years thereafter.
