Michigan survey finds local leaders wary of data centers

The Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy at the University of Michigan has released a survey report on Michigan local government leaders’ views on large-scale data center development.

• The report is based on the Spring 2026 Michigan Public Policy Survey conducted March 30 to June 9, 2026, and published as a September 2026 report.
• Findings include 46% of officials saying data centers’ benefits do not outweigh costs, 55% saying residents would strongly oppose development, and 59% calling regulation a very high priority.
• The report also says 60% expect negative impacts on fresh water supply, and it highlights support for state rules on decommissioning plans, health impacts, environmental impacts, water use, and energy efficiency.
