Moldova declares 60-day energy and hydrological emergency

The Republic of Moldova has announced a 60-day state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors, starting on September 26.

• The Official Journal published the decision; during the emergency, authorities may use accelerated procedures to procure equipment for critical infrastructure and simplify installation of storage systems, generators, and other emergency capacities.
• If needed, the government may temporarily adjust heating system operating conditions, apply regulatory or fiscal measures amid gas or fuel market shocks, prioritize drinking water supply, limit non-essential water uses, and mobilize pumps and generators.
• The draft decision was approved by Parliament on Tuesday, September 22, with support from 54 lawmakers, after about five hours of debate; Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said the measure is preventive ahead of the cold season and overlapping regional risks.
