Pembina urges Alberta to open BYOG rules

The Pembina Institute has published a submission to the Alberta Electricity System Operator’s Bring Your Own Generation (BYOG) consultation, urging Alberta to adopt a technology-agnostic approach for powering new data center load.

• Pembina says data center connection requests in Alberta rose from 5 GW in early 2024 to 20 GW in late 2025, compared with Alberta’s 12.8 GW all-time peak demand set in 2025.
• The submission says the current BYOG framework effectively pushes developers toward natural gas, and recommends allowing wind, solar, energy storage, demand-side management, and other flexibilities instead of relying on a single technology.
