Pembina warns Alberta gas plant raises power costs

The Pembina Institute, through David Pickup, issued a statement reacting to Alberta’s final investment decision for a 932 MW gas power project in the province’s Industrial Heartland.

• The statement says the 932 MW combined cycle natural gas power plant is expected to cost $4 billion and argues it will raise gas demand, electricity costs, and emissions in Alberta.
• It also criticizes Alberta’s Bring Your Own Generation approach for data centers, saying it effectively limits new generation options to gas-fired power and contrasts this with hybrid renewable-backed data center approaches in Texas and Minnesota.
