IAEA projects global nuclear capacity to 2050

The IAEA has published the 45th edition of Reference Data Series No. 1 containing nuclear power projections to 2050.

  • Main announcement: The report presents global nuclear capacity projections with a low case of 561 GW(e) by 2050 (a 50% increase from 377 GW(e) in 2024) and a high case of 992 GW(e) by 2050 (about 2.6 times the 2024 capacity).
  • Methodology and structure: Projections consider all operating reactors, possible licence renewals, planned shutdowns, power uprates, and plausible construction projects; the report is organized into world and regional subsections and frames low/high cases based on assumptions about market, technology, resources, and policy/regulatory changes.
