New Zealand overhauls rules for electricity and telecom networks
The New Zealand Government has announced final changes to the Resource Management Act national direction framework, including new standards for electricity network activities and telecommunication facilities.
- The reforms are intended to make it faster, easier and more affordable to build and upgrade electricity and telecommunications networks, with nationally consistent rules taking effect from today.
- Officials estimate the changes could save $40 million to $50 million in planning and consenting costs over the next decade; the article also notes Transpower spent around $14 million seeking protection for the National Grid corridor council by council.
- The package follows public consultation in 2025 and forms part of a broader programme that has developed or amended 16 national direction instruments across infrastructure, housing, energy and the primary sector.
