On September 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy closed a loan of up to $1.9 billion to NextEra Energy to help finance restarting the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa. The plant stopped operating in 2020. Its return runs through a Google offtake deal and a set of Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals that are still pending. DOE says the restart would return 615 megawatts of baseload generation to the grid.
