American Electric Power has announced a new 702-megawatt fuel cell generation project near Cheyenne, Wyoming, backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google.
- AEP plans to invest approximately $4 billion in the project, with construction expected to start in 2026 and the facility to be fully operational by the end of 2028.
- Under the PPA, Google will acquire power from Cheyenne Fuel Cell, LLC, which is about 92% owned and controlled by AEP and nearly 8% owned by funds advised by Basalt Infrastructure Partners; the project will use Bloom Energy fuel cell technology and includes plans to integrate carbon capture for near-zero-emissions power.
- The release says the project follows agreements reached between Google and Black Hills Corp., effective Sept. 30.
