Eskom board tasked to cut electricity costs and expand grid

Eskom’s board has been tasked by South African Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to reduce electricity costs, improve reliability, and secure the utility’s long-term future.

• New board expectations: Eskom must produce a single roadmap for the next 3, 5 and 10 years, define its public obligations, future generation mix, and required investment, while avoiding reliance on repeated fiscal support or double-digit tariff increases.
• Operational and investment priorities: The utility must work on grid expansion, Independent Transmission Projects, coal emissions reduction, coal-abatement technologies, repowering/repurposing sites, gas and nuclear strategy, and Eskom Green’s planned discussions with partners on approximately 2 GW of renewable capacity; the minister also said data centers need reliable supply, suitable locations, network capacity, and long-term contracts.
