IBM, ORNL and AMD unveil quantum error correction platform

IBM - Announcements · November 05, 2026 · ✓ verified

IBM, the Quantum Science Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and AMD have announced a new co-design platform for quantum error correction that integrates quantum and high-performance computing.

  • The first deployment co-locates IBM quantum computers — including the 120-qubit IBM Quantum Nighthawk — with ORNL’s Umbra HPC system, powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and 5th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs.
  • The platform will be used to test error correction, decoding optimization, and software orchestration; it ties into the DOE’s Quantum Genesis Mission and its Q Competition target of 100 logical qubits and 100,000 hard operations by late 2028.
