Japan official attends IEA ministerial on energy security

The METI Counselor Matsuo attended the IEA Ministerial Council in Paris on 18-19 February 2026.

• Main action: Matsuo chaired the nuclear-themed session and led discussions on finance, supply chains, and human resources strengthening; he also called for investment and government involvement to secure supply capacity amid rising global energy demand from data centers and AI, and urged redundancy and supply-chain diversification to boost energy system resilience.
• Background & outcomes: The meeting included about 60 countries and 50+ companies/institutions; a ministerial declaration on critical minerals was compiled as an outcome document and a Chair’s summary was issued by the Netherlands. Bilateral talks were held with Poland’s Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka (on nuclear and LNG cooperation) and with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol (confirming IEA’s role in energy security).
