Lav Varshney discusses AI, data centers, climate

Stony Brook University reported on a September 23 talk by Lav Varshney titled “The Physical Economy of Intelligence: Marketcraft, Data Centers and Climate.” This is a university event recap/commentary rather than a new corporate announcement.

• Varshney discussed how AI infrastructure, data centers, chips/GPUs, cooling, and grid impacts shape the economics and environmental footprint of AI.
• He argued that markets and institutions will determine AI’s direction, and said pricing should reflect water scarcity and land impacts beyond the purchase parcel; the talk was sponsored by the Collaborative for the Earth, Department of Political Science, and AI Innovation Institute at a Sept. 23 event in the Laufer Center.
