UK offers £10m for off-grid EV charging technology

The UK government announced a £10 million competition to fund cutting-edge off-grid EV charging technology on 3 November 2025, with applications via Innovate UK open until 25 March 2026.

  • Competition details: £10 million fund (announced 3 November 2025) to support off-grid / grid-constrained EV charging solutions for England’s strategic road network (motorways and major A-roads); projects must enable at least 12 EVs to access ultra-rapid charging (around 120–145 miles of range in 15 minutes). Applications close 25 March 2026 via Innovate UK.
  • Background and related measures: Follows the £650 million Electric Car Grant (has helped over 25,000 drivers with discounts of up to £3,750); UK chargepoint network at a record 86,021 chargers (a 23% year-on-year increase); strongest rural growth in Yorkshire, the North West, Scotland and Wales. Government consulting to cut red tape could save £250 on planning fees and enable running a car for as little as 2p per mile (example: £2.50 London to Birmingham).
