Meta breaks ground on first Canada data center

Meta has announced that it is breaking ground on its first data center in Canada, a 1 GW AI-optimized facility in Sturgeon County, Alberta.

• The project is expected to involve an investment of more than CAD$13 billion, support about 3,000 construction workers at peak, and create more than 300 operational jobs.
• Meta said it will invest approximately CAD$60 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water infrastructure, and will launch its annual Data Center Community Action Grants in the region.
• Meta said the site will use a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system with dry cooling and that its electricity use will be matched with 100% clean and renewable energy.
• Meta said it worked with Greenlight Limited Partnership, AltaLink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to plan energy needs years in advance and will fully fund new generation and grid infrastructure in Alberta.
