  The popularity of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is increasing due to the projected growth of renewable energy sources in the United States. However, there are fire risks associated with BESS, particularly with lithium-ion batteries. To reduce these risks, it is important to adhere to NFPA 855 standards for new BESS installations and implement safety measures such as proper placement of containers, enhanced fire-resistant walls, exhaust ventilation, explosion suppression or deflagration venting, and continuous gas detection. Additionally, larger BESS units can be protected with automatic fire sprinkler systems.
